BE STILL

This past weekend I held a camping trip for my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. It was a fun weekend of fellowship involving 4-wheeling, skeet-shooting, fishing, cookout, and a bonfire. We had a great time with all the activities.

We had a devotional time with worship. My thanks to Ryan and Kerry in leading us in the worship even though we couldn’t read the music. Then I lead us in a short devotional.

My devotional was based upon: Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

I chose this verse for the 1st part of it about being still. In today’s world if we are not constantly doing something or going somewhere then we will fall behind according to the world.

Those that know me would say I am a quiet guy and they are right. I have many opinions on God and the faith and the world around us. I choose not to share them because not everything has to be shared all the time.

One prime example of my quietness was in the Army. I am not tall nor muscular but I am resourceful. I had been in basic training for close to a month. We had passed the physical weeks and were in the Basic Rifleman training.

One night after training, these guys (who were tall and muscular) asked me to come over and talk to them. I did not know what to expect. One guy asked me “Have we done anything to make you mad?”. I said “No. Why?”. He said ” Please tell us if we ever do and we won’t do it again.” I said “Ok but why again?” He said “We have been here a month now and you have barely said a word but you have passed everything and not been punished once and nor have you smiled any and you always have this look of someone who knows exactly what to expect.” This surprised me; these guys were bigger than me and they could handle themselves in a fight. They were indicating both fear and respect of me even though I have just gone about my business and not bothered anybody. He ended the conversation by saying “I hope you never get mad here and if you do please warn us first.” I just said “Ok.”

My quietness in this example earned the respect of my fellow soldiers.

In the times when I listen to people talk about their lives. I hear more than their problems or joys but I enjoy seeing who they are by their words and actions.

In my walk with God I have always found his voice the loudest when I am not saying a thing. Just listening to him is such a joy and understanding his path for me.

I would ask that you take the time to listen to him in your life and not talk so much.
