Today, October 31, 2007, marks the 490th anniversary of Reformation Day. On this date in 1517, Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the Castle Church doors in Wittenberg, Germany.

Plantinga Lectures

This past week, Alvin Plantinga, one of the greatest philosophers of our time and the John A. O’Brien Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame, gave four lectures as a part of the Norton Lecture series. This series is hosted by Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky focuses on “Science and Philosophy in their Relations to Religion.”

Plantinga’s four lectures are now available at the Southern Seminary website:

Oct. 24, 2007 - “Divine Action in the World”

I haven’t had a chance to listen to this yet; however, the details of this SermonAudio.com “Listen of the Week” have me intrigued:

Peter Orasuk was a heroin addict and drug kingpin in Canada until Christ reached down and saved him. This is his testimony that was preached in the Ballymena Gospel Hall in N. Ireland.

This is a ‘must hear’, not only for people who are doing drugs, but for anyone who wants to hear of the power of Christ to save the most hopeless of sinners.

Jesus and Logic

J.P. Moreland has an excellent post today in which he uses Scripture to show how Jesus used logical forms and laws in his thinking and reasoning:

Today there is widespread indifference to, even downright hostility towards logic and the fundamental laws that govern it. We are sometimes told that logic is a Western construction invented by DWEM’s (Dead White European Males such as Aristotle), that in a postmodern world, story and narrative have replaced a cold-hearted, logical approach to life, and that Jesus was a prophet for the common man, not a logician for the “wise and intelligent.???

I could not disagree more. Logic comes from the very nature of God Himself, its employment need not be cold and impersonal, it can be expressed through story and narrative as C. S. Lewis’s works of fiction nicely illustrate, and Jesus used logic with “the common man??? every bit as much as he did with the “wise and intelligent.??? In what follows, I shall unpack these assertions by doing two things: present a primer on logic and God, and explain and illustrate Jesus’ skill in using logic. Read more »

A Different Kind of Mission Trip

Pastor Jim Wallace of The Rising Tide church is blogging about a mission trip that he is leading this week. The trip is for the youth in his church, and for their trip, they have traveled to Utah where they will interact with Mormons all week long. Each day, they’ll be posting updates on their daily activities. They state their purpose as follows:

We go to Utah because those who have rejected the FREE GIFT of Salvation and exchanged it for another Gospel of Works have placed themselves in an accursed position. We simply want to share the liberating truth of the Gospel of Grace. It’s not about debating. It’s not about arguing. It’s not about winning a point. It’s ALL ABOUT RESCUING.
